as I did...I hope you never get into the same sort of mess as I did.
Because I was very lucky
I didn't get killed by an avalanche or stuck on the backside of the mountain range without my snowshoes...

GPS UNITS and SOFTWARE
GPS units can be pretty simple to extremely complicated...Most GPS experts will tell you to buy the GPS recievers which provides you with the basic functions that you usually might need for your situation...GPS units become increasingly complicated as you add functions and most advanced functions may be rarely used for backcountry navigation...not to mention the more complicated , the more costly they are!!! There are some good places that discuss choosing and buying GPS recievers...
WHO HAS GOOD GPS RECIEVERS AND SOFTWARE ON THE INTERNET ?
If you live in the North or South America, one of the best places to shop for a good GPS unit
is at Backcountry.com...They have one of the largest selections of GPS recievers anywhere, with some of the best prices...

Another good place to check out is X10.com...They have a fair selection of GPS handhelds but you might find a GPS reciever for your car for that long drive to that new resort!!! Another really good place to shop for GPS recievers is at REI.com GPS & Electronics They have GPS outdoor recievers by Magellan, Garmin and Lowrance...They also have an GPS units for your car with three units by Garmin. Two are the street pilot models the third is the Garmin Quest....Check em out and see if they got something you like...
Here is a very good source for deals on GPS handheld units used for snowboarding navigation at Target.com...Try Target.com where you can Expect more, Pay less in the Electronics Shop at Target.com has a very large selection of good reasonably priced GPS handheld units...
But they are very hard to find, here is the hot tip... Click the link to Target.com, then type "gps" no quotes, into the find it box and select electronics from catagories...click go... you will then find almost 90 different GPS products and accessories...I couldn't find them any other way, they are in a sort of hidden catagory...
