THE BEST INFO ABOUT SNOWBOARD BAGS!
UPDATED FOR THE 2006/2007 SEASON

You can find out EVERYTHING and ANYTHING you need to know about snowboard bags for protecting your snowboard...Right Here Right Now!

WHY USE A SNOWBOARDING BAG?
In most cases, a board bag is a very necessary and desirable snowboard accessory addition to your gear and in most cases is MANDATORY if you plan to travel by air or train or bus...

In my neck of the woods you cannot ride the bus or train without a board bag or sleeve...Snowboard sleeves are very popular in Asia and Europe, but not very popular in N. America YET...I will talk about snowboard sleeves versus snowboard bags in more detail a little farther along in this section...

There are many styles of snowboard accessory travel bags with lots of different designs...The main purpose of these bags is to protect your snowboard from damage while getting from your crib to the slopes...Lots of these snowboard accessory bags have padding designed to keep your board intact after a ride with your favorite airline or travel company maybe even your friends tricked out SUV if your snowboard ends up at the bottom of the pile in the back...

SNOWBOARD BAG FEATURES
Many of these bags have lots of extra pockets and compartments to stash other extra snowboard accessory gear, such as snowboard tuning kits, extra goggles and gloves or mittens, socks, hats, snacks and an extra change of clothes...
An ID tag pocket or loop to attach a tag is also a nice feature...

Most of these types of snowboard accessory bags are made from heavy duty nylon or canvas type fabric...They can be fairly inexpensive to very expensive depending on the size, quality and extra features...

The ZIPPERS should be large and tough, with large teeth and double sewn at the edges...You dont want your snowboard bag to split open if it is slightly overpacked, in transit...
The Zipper Tab should be large and easy to find...Most are not...On my own bags I added my own tabs to the zipper closures. Many of the best bags have two zipper closures so you have the convenience to open them from either end...

The highest quality snowboard bags will have substantial and tough padding at both ends...Even with padding, I always add an extra sweater or sweatshirt wrapped around the tips and tail of my boards before traveling by air...

TYPES OF SNOWBOARD BAGS

SNOWBOARD SLEEVES...
Many snowboarders where I live use a snowboard sleeve to protect their snowboard for LOCAL travel...This basically is a nylon/neoprene or canvas cover that covers the bottom of your board and the sides but doesn't cover the top or bindings...They are kinda like an ironing board cover with an elastic band around the edge...They can be an inexpensive and handy snowboard accessory...Plus they are required for bus and train travel in some countries...

The advantages are...they are inexpensive and lightweight. They also are very sleek and are easier to carry than a standard snowboard accessory bag...They do a really good job of protecting your snowboard from the normal abuse of local travel...

The disadvantage to this type of sleeve is they have no extra storage and are really not suited for traveling by air...They are a perfect snowboard accessory for people who live close to their local resort and rarely travel far from home...

ECONOMY SNOWBOARD BAGS...
Simple one zipper bags with one or two pockets that allows you to fit your snowboard inside and maybe a few extra snowboard accessory items...Most of these have little or no padding, they are good for longer trips by car, bus or train and allow you to move your gear easily from your crib to the hotel or resort locker room...

MY most used snowboard bag is this type made by DAKINE...I can fit my snowboard, my snowboard boots, helmet, goggles and a few extra snowboard accessory items and clothes inside...It was affordable and works well for most travel situations...The only disadvantage is that it lacks padding and is not as suitable for air travel...I have used it before for overseas travel... but...I used extra clothing for padding at the tip and tail with never any damage...

TRAVEL SNOWBOARD BAGS...
are used for all travel situations...They almost always have lots of padding and extra pockets and compartments to add extra gear...They also tend to be made with a heavier material and may have reinforced ends...They provide maximum protection and storage for other snowboard accessory gear...
Many of these bags come with wheels and with backpack style straps which can be a major plus...
It is well worth a few extra bucks to get a snowboard travel bag that has wheels and backback straps...

The disadvantages of these snowboard accessory bags are they are more expensive, heavier and bulkier... This means you need a larger locker at your resort, have less room in your car and people tend to pack more gear than is really needed as they have so many pockets adding to the weight and bulk...

Be aware that the airlines in the USA have been forced by the cool and bitchin USA government to reject bags over 70 lbs...They also charge extra for any bag weighing over 50 lbs...Two bags weighing over a total of 100 lbs get heavily charged...If your bag weighs over 70 lbs you have only two options... repack the bag to weigh less than 70 lbs...or it must go air cargo, a major bummer and hassle and very expensive...

You can expect the overweight bag to arrive 1-3 days after your arrival. YOU ALSO probably will arrive a day late, cause you missed your flight getting the bag over to air cargo and getting it checked in...
Take it from me... been there, done that , I was way pissed off...I VOWED NEVER AGAIN...
Take My Advice and weigh your bag at home if you have ANY doubts it weighs close to 70 lbs...

HARDCASE SNOWBOARD CARRIERS...
There are also some hardcase snowboard carriers that provide maximum protection of your gear, but I think they really are desirable for the frequent and international snowboarding traveler...These cases take up alot of extra room in the car or at your hotel and can't be stored easily in lockers...
My advice is too get a inexpensive snowboard accessory bag or sleeve for local travel...Then buy a more expensive snowboard accessory bag when you decide to travel farther from home...

The other option is to do like I did for the first year or two and pad your simple inexpensive bag at the ends with sweaters or other extra clothing items when traveling by air...Either way a snowboard bag is a good idea...Do spend the time to research each type of snowboard bag and get an idea on design and price before you pick something that works for you...Another good idea is to see what other snowboarders are using in your area and ask your friends about their snowboard bags and snowboard accessory items, especially about the disadvantages...
