THE PROS AND CONS OF WEARING A HELMET....
Helmets are great protection and cheap insurance in case you kiss a tree, have someone else run into you or catch an edge and get slammed into the hard snow or a hard object...All three things I have had happen to me before and MORE than once...
SNOWBOARDING HELMETS... 3 REAL GOOD PRO REASONS WHY ALL THE PROS WEAR HELMETS
THE #1 REASON... is SNOWBOARD HELMETS protect your melon/head from serious injury if someone crashes into YOU or you get going too fast and crash and burn.... My own experience is I learned to snowboard real fast...The problem was that I could go much faster than my skill level allowed me to stop quickly or avoid obstacles moving or stationary and sooner than later I would take a high speed wipe out. If you are lucky, its only snow, if you're unlucky...maybe a tree, a pole or a rock... Later as my skills progressed, I spent alot of time in areas with lots of trees, rocks and other natural obstacles... My current helmet is scratched up plenty, my head is fine...Although my wife might disagree!! YOU GET THE PICTURE !!! #2 REASON...SNOWBOARDING HELMETS are perfect for snowboarding because they are much WARMER than most hats......Especially helmets with ear flaps... I WAS SURPRIZED MY FIRST TIME WEARING ONE..HOW WARM THEY CAN BE.....
I prefer snowboarding helmets for this reason alone..I rarely have a problem with my helmet being TOO warm...Remember...It is usually way EASIER to cool off than to warm up....This can be as simple as removing your snowboard helmet for a minute or two on the ride up the lift..
#3 REASON...SNOWBOARDING HELMETS are INEXPENSIVE compared to even the price of one ambulance ride and visit to the emergency room for even a minor bump on the noggin...
I happened to see a guy at Heavenly Valley in TAHOE in December 2004 who was sitting in the bar with his girlfriend and talking to a few ski patrollers.I thought they were friends until they started checking him out and eventually took him out of the bar in a basket and onto the patrol sled for a ride down the mountain...It turns out he had fallen down and bumped his head....NO HELMET ON...Now he was talking strangely and couldn't remember where he was...probably only a concussion... But easily avoided if he had a helmet on...
SNOWBOARDING HELMETS CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE OR PREVENT YOU FROM BEING SERIOUSLY INJURED COMPARED TO SLIGHTLY INJURED...IF YOU DONT THINK YOU NEED A SNOWBOARDING HELMET...CHECK OUT WHAT HAPPENED TO MY FRIEND IAN...AT THE SAFETY GEAR PAGE... DEDICATED TO HIM...
THERE ARE SOME CONS TO WEARING SNOWBOARDING HELMETS... BUT THEY ARE SLIGHT COMPARED TO THE PROS...
They can be too warm sometimes...If you ride in warmer conditions make sure to get a VENTILATED HELMET.Some snowboarding helmets can also restrict your field of vision slightly. They can feel heavy when you first wear them. A warmer than needed helmet can cause your goggles to fog up prematurely creating a dangerous condition. It's not cool or safe to ride if you can't see well...
There have been a few studies that SUGGEST small kids necks may be more likely to be injured in a crash wearing a snowboarding helmet than without one...My suggestion for small kids is to buy the short shell or the lightest of the snowboarding helmets made specifically for kids...
ALL THESE CONS ARE SLIGHT COMPARED TO THE PROS!!! SO take my advice and at least give a helmet a try!!!
Honestly...I had trouble with mine the first two days, but I soon realized how warm, comfortable and necessary it was for my style of riding, steep and deep powder in tight trees and backcountry... I LOVE MY HELMET NOW, I NEVER EVER GO SNOWBOARDING WITHOUT IT!!!
FOUR DIFFERENT TYPES OF SNOWBOARDING HELMETS
FULL SHELL....
These snowboarding helmets are used for freestyle and freecarving styles of riding and also for the backcountry. These helmets offer good protection for your whole head...
SHORT SHELL....
ALSO CALLED 3/4 OR HALF SHELL...These snowboard helmets tend to be lighter and less cumbersome than a full shell helmet, but offer less protection than a full shell helmet. They are good for snowboarders who normally wouldn't wear a helmet or for the recreational snowboarder who rides groomed runs for fun, not a speedster or into doing tricks, jumps and riding the terrain parks...
RACING HELMETS.... These helmets have dense padding and spaces for your ears. They usually have add-on face shields and jaw covers and offer the best protection at higher speeds. The downside to these helmets is that they are heavier, hotter and can restrict your field of vision somewhat...
JUNIOR OR YOUTH HELMETS ....
These helmets come in the exact same 3 above styles, but are smaller in size to fit a smaller head...CHECK OUT the SNOWBOARDING FOR KIDS section for more information on Kids gear and snowboarding helmets...
SOME OTHER SNOWBOARDING HELMET CONSIDERATIONS...
GOOD FIT...VERY GOOD FIT... Make sure your snowboarding helmet fits real well with a snug fit. Do not buy a size bigger thinking you can add extra padding or wear a hat underneath...YOU DO NOT WANT TO DO THAT !!!You can get headliners made to be worn under helmets, the headliners are very thin and help wick moisture away from your head and really help to keep a constant temperature when you go from fully active to inactive like when you are riding up the lift...
VENTED VERSUS NON VENTED...
I prefer a fully vented/adjustable vented snowboard helmet...I want to be able to adjust the venting based on how warm I feel and the outside conditions and temperature...
GOGGLE CLIPS AND EARFLAPS ARE A REALLY GOOD IDEA... REMOVABLE EAR FLAPS are an even better idea.Your helmet should have a goggle strap or clip to hold your goggles in place so you don't lose them when you crash.
HELMET/GOGGLE COMPATIBILITY You should consider buying an integrated pair of goggles that are designed to be worn with a particular helmet...This isn't as much a problem anymore as most goggle makers have redesigned most goggles to be helmet compatible...MY BETTER-HALF...ALSO A SNOWBOARDING MASTER had trouble with her goggles fogging up until she got a Briko helmet with Briko goggles...
HELMETS WITH INTEGRATED TUNES These are fairly new to the scene. But in many ways are a very cool idea and a really cool feature for snowboarding...These are the audio integrated helmets with tunes and sometimes even your cell phone hooked up as a integral part of your helmet...
MY ONLY CAUTION ... is to be aware these audio helmets shouldn't be worn by beginners as they need to concentrate on safe snowboarding and learning to snowboard safely without the extra distraction...I tried one of these helmets last season and I found it could cause me to lose my concentration and focus on where I was and what I was doing...
BUT THEY ARE REALLY VERY COOL FOR THE RIDE UP THE LIFT OR FOR THAT LONG HIKE up to your favorite run in the backcountry...
