NOTICE THE BLACK AND BLUE COLORS?? Got some Aspirin??
The snowboarding school for LEARN AND DO IT YOUR SELF snowboarders with a borrowed or rental snowboard gear and HOPEFULLY a helmet and safety gear... and a big bottle of aspirin... Cause this is how I learned....cause I thought I know better... Well I know better now!....LAUGH and LEARN PEOPLE...from my mistakes! Because I went to this snowboarding school and got schooled sure enough Check out my..SNOWBOARDING MASTERS HISTORY LESSON to read about my REAL first day of snowboarding OK...OK... How to Fall down 100 times or more off the top lift.......on a powder day.......and I didn't know anything about beginner snowboards...MY friend was riding a cool free ride board! Which I borrowed. He of course is a Snowboarding master himself and he made sure I got the hard knock snowboarding school classes every day for a week... DETERMINING WHETHER YOU ARE A GOOFY OR REGULAR FOOT RIDER AND ALL ABOUT STANCE ANGLES Here is a good way to help you determine whether you are a Regular or a Goofy foot rider... Regular foot means you will ride with your LEFT foot forward. Goofy foot means you will ride with your RIGHT foot forward.... (Thanks to JF for pointing out my BIG error... 1/21/2010) Try this to determine your stance... With your socks on run fast and try to slide to a stop on any smooth floor surface...try it at least 7 times and note which foot you slide with forward..... Whichever foot you use to slide forward with most times that's the foot you wanna use when boarding. STANCE ANGLES You also need to know about stance angles...Stance angles are measured in degrees, 0 degrees being lined up perpendicular to the length of your board and 90 degrees being parallel with the length of your board ...If both your bindings are set at 0 degrees, your feet will be perfectly perpendicular to the length of your board. Most beginners want to have their front foot angled toes pointing slightly forward at 5 to 10 degrees...back foot usually at zero degrees.... Ask your rental shop, snowboarding school or friends to set you up and explain how the stance angles on your bindings work.On beginner snowboards its easy to change the binding angles.....Once you can board a bit try different angles and see what fits your style and what kind of boarding you plan to do... Many freestyle riders like to ride duck foot which is both feet angled away from each other and toward the nose and tail of the board usually between 5 and 15 degrees...Carvers and speed racers usually have both feet pointed at a steeper angle maybe from 15 to 25 degrees towards the nose of the board... Try different angles and see which you are most comfortable with for your riding type and style... GETTING PREPARED TO BORROW, RENT OR BUY EQUIPMENT BORROW...RENT...OR BUY SOME SNOWBOARD GEAR... Borrow a board , bindings and score some boots that fit you...Some of your friends might have some old beginner snowboards they may let you use...Make sure if you borrow snowboard boots that they fit really well and are comfortable...If the your friends boots do not fit well, consider renting just the boots for the day... If your friends ain't gonna cough up any beginner snowboards for you to use. YOU CAN RENT GEAR from a snowboarding school... This is a very good idea for your first few times. The best way is to try to get a discover snowboarding package which includes the rental gear, snowboarding school lessons and lift ticket, this is usually the least expensive and easiest way to start... BUYING SNOWBOARD GEAR If you are gonna buy some snowboard gear cause DADDYo or your rich uncle coughed up some $CASH$...At least buy a beginner snowboard and snowboarding gear that is inexpensive.....Show DADDYo or uncle Rich you got some smarts...as you are only gonna use it one season maybe less...They might even pay for some lessons at your local snowboarding school...You can always pass it onto a younger bro or sis....or sell it cheap to one of your newbie friends! You can buy beginner snowboards from a bunch of places on the net ....Hey if you are gonna go buy gear... go check out the section NOW about SNOWBOARD SIZING you don't need a snowboarding school to learn about snowboard sizing before buying your gear... Then go check out the section on beginner snowboards with boots and bindings at the SNOWBOARD PACKAGES section... Then come on back here to the snowboarding school for some continuing education.... IF YOU BUY your gear DO NOT FORGET to buy a STOMP PAD or STOMP BUTTONS... You can find stomp pads in these places SNOWBOARD ACCESSORIES SECTION You also might need to buy a leash if your home resort requires them !!! STOMP PADS & LEASHES The stomp pad is a rubber or plastic pad between your bindings that gives you a solid and non slip place to put your back foot when you are getting on or off the lift or walking or skating...A self stick stomp pad is the easiest to install yourself. You need to know if you are regular foot or goofy foot before you do this!!! Position the stomp pad just in front of your rear binding, strap your front foot into the front binding and make sure the pad is in the right place for your rear foot to give you a balanced stance, mark the outline of the pad and peel the plastic off the pad and carefully position it and press it into place...If you get a non stick pad , you can use rubber cement to glue it down onto the board ...Some slight sandpapering will roughen the surface enough for the glue to stick...Make sure to put plenty of glue at the edges of the pad...You don't need a snowboarding school to put on your own stomp pad... Leashes are required at some resorts but not others, Basically Find one that attaches to your bindings and usually clips to your boot laces or a loop on your boot if they have them or they may clip around your entire boot. Leashes I think are not necessary as most runaway boards occur when people drop their boards or lose them when they are trying to get into their bindings ! NOW WHAT? So now you know if you will borrow, buy or rent your gear and whether you will take lessons from your local snowboarding school or you can get some of your friends to teach you.....You are in for a rough ride!!! Do it the other way ! ...Go to your nearest snowboarding school and GO GET A LESSON! BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME OR THE NIGHT BEFORE If you are not gonna listen to anybody... listen to me on this. If you already bought gear or rented gear before you head to the resort... The night before you are going to learn with your friends teaching ya or taking your first lesson at your local snowboarding school...Practice walking around with the board strapped to your front foot....You DO have a board , bindings and some boots...RIGHT??? Practice in your living room ONLY on carpet, not on the hardwood floor! "you dont wanna piss off mom, dad or your roomies"...or practice on the grass outside your crib and if you're lucky try it in your front/back yard in the little bit of snow from last night... Get used to walking around with it...backwards and forwards, learn to turn around....Learn to sit down and get back up......once you got the hang of that....Strap the other foot in and sit down.....on your tail unit ....Now how are ya gonna get up???Yah Yah YAH man... I know, I KNOW EXACTLY what you mean.... THE BEST WAY is to roll over, Start by lifting your legs and the board as high as you can and then roll over so you are facing the carpet, lawn or snow and then do a push up....Now think about it ... It's not gonna be so easy in the snow... Head on over to your local snowboarding school and GO GET A LESSON... If you are not gonna listen...Its time to hit the slopes with your friends, check them out...Why are they laughin? They are gonna be laughin even more, soon as you get on the chairlift assuming you make it to the lift...How you gonna get off???Probably on your tail unit...If not on your tail, maybe on your face... So now you should have listened to me right here go to snowboarding school... BEFORE YOU GET ON THE CHAIRLIFT... Practice walking around again in the snow....then go practice sliding downhill on the flattest area you can find thats not really flat.... Try to feel how the board reacts as you change the pressure from front to back foot and from toes to your heels....Let your friends do some warm up runs and tell em to meet you at say...10 am...at the lift... If you cant slide more than 10 or 20 feet by then... DONT SHOW UP AT THE LIFT... Head on over to the snowboarding school and GO GET A LESSON!!! GETTING ON THE CHAIRLIFT If you can slide 10 to 20 feet by then... Go meet your friends and it is time to get on the lift...IF it is a chairlift for beginners, the lift guy or girl usually will slow down the lift for you first time up, but maybe not at the top...You usually need to wait in line , while waiting in line, watch closely what everyone else is doing and pay close attention...The idea is to time your entry onto the loading area just after the previous people loaded their chair, but each chairlift is different with different speeds and loading systems, each resort may do it different...If you need help or are not sure, ask the lift attendant for info or help... You usually line up at a colored line made of plastic, sprayed color on the snow or none at all...the center or tip of your board at the line and look over your shoulder to watch for the chair coming behind you and to time when to sit down ,sit down as soon as you can and sit back as far as possible, hold on...Keep your board flat and up off the snow as much as possible ...be careful if your board catches an edge... you could get pulled out of the chair...If there is a safety bar,use it... Now Enjoy the ride and the scenery... because soon you need to get off the lift!!! GETTING OFF THE CHAIRLIFT Make sure you dont try to get off too soon...wait until the front of your board is over the beginning of the downward sloping ramp, stand up and push away from the chair while at the same time put your back foot lightly on the stomp pad...Look ahead about 20 feet down the ramp and keep your weight forward on your front foot, lightly touch your rear foot on the stomp pad... If you are lucky you might make it the 20 feet or so to clear the ramp... ITS TOO LATE TO GO TO THE SNOWBOARDING SCHOOL AND GET A LESSON! IF you don't make it down the ramp get back up and move out of the way as fast as possible... Once you have dragged yourself out of the way of everybody coming off the chair... GETTING DOWN THE MOUNTAIN Get back up and strap your back foot in, concentrate on keeping your weight on your front foot as much as possible...Your weight on your rear foot as little as possible....Put your hands out in front of you like you are driving a car or a go-cart... Try to pretend this steering wheel is a little out of your reach. This will help you keep your weight forward... Practice shifting your weight from front to back foot and from your toes to your heels... Let your friends spend some time trying to teach you...Odds are they will bail out on you after about 15 minutes or 200 yards whichever comes first... In about 3 hours and about 75 crashes later whichever comes first...You might be able to turn...The frontside turn toes pointing uphill is usually easier for people to learn first, try to learn to turn in both directions... If you can turn in either direction after 3 hours cool...keep practicing, you might be able to do this on your own after all! maybe you are a natural!!! Maybe you don't need snowboarding school after all!!! If you can't ...walk down or slide down the hill sitting on your board... Head on over to the snowboarding school and sign up for A FEW LESSONS AFTER LUNCH!!! You FAILED this class... Please see me after class to discuss your payment options ! If you made it down the mountain in one piece with no injuries and no broken equipment or damaged friendships... YOU GRADUATED FROM THE SNOWBOARDING MASTERS SNOWBOARDING SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS!!! Or You Finished your Local Snowboarding School beginner course ! Its time for you to reward yourself and go check out some beginner snowboards to buy...
